The Thompson Nicola is located in the heart of British Columbia, it includes vast regions of desert, prairies, ranchland and snow-capped mountains. The City of Kamloops is physically in the centre of the region which stretches from Valemount and Blue River to the north to Merritt and the Nicola Valley to the south. The name Kamloops came from from the Shuswap Indian word meaning the "meeting place". It is located in a valley where the North and South Thompson Rivers meet. It is also the meeting place for three major highways and two rail lines.
Kamloops is known for its hot, bright summers and mild, snow-filled winters, which makes it a fun place to play in any season. The area is widely recognized as a freshwater fishing hotspot, golfers find many courses to tempt them, and skiing & snowmobile touring attract winter visitors.
In the winter skiing and snowboarding can be enjoyed at the spectacular Sun Peaks Resort. Canada's 3rd largest ski resort is just outside Kamloops, has 4,000 acres of diverse terrain and boasts 559 cm. (17 ft.) of snow per year.
